Land-art in Wrangel Island

Land-art

Land-art

It is author’s story about several land-art installations, which he initiated near Kmo Lake in Wrangel Island in 1980s as first creator of the Kmo-Lake-Scientific-Point. The land-art examples included: selected placement of the experimental red-colored mini-building (it was really red in 1979), and installation of some unique symbols of local post-Pleistocene artifacts i.e. very old white mammoth tusk, good size mountain crystal. Additional tusks the author left at their primary place near Sovetskayja River. The idea was that a visitor will ‘find out’ the artifacts near the building casually. Some years after visitors added second mammoth tusk to the installation. Unfortunately, the noted good size crystal was stolen by a crazy Arctic tourist. May be he/she decided to decorate by it a private flat somewhere. Please return it back! This year author added new examples to the land-art gallery, and which was based on new remote sensing data of Digital Globe source. This new ‘RS-land-art’ idea gives nice chances to artists to develop land-art examples distantly and to be friendly to vulnerable Arctic environment.
